Half Moon Bay has two dining areas a few miles apart. Downtown Main Street is a short strip of low wooden buildings with cafes, bakeries and a long-running Italian restaurant. Pillar Point Harbor, north of town in Princeton-by-the-Sea, is where the fishing boats come in and where you go for chowder, fish and chips and a pint with a view. A good coast day uses both.

This guide names only places we confirmed on their own websites in late October and early November 2026. Descriptions stay factual and hours come from those sites, which coastal restaurants change with the seasons and the weather. For beaches, trails and pumpkin season, see our Half Moon Bay day trip guide.

Main Street and the harbor

From Highway 92, Main Street runs north and south just east of Highway 1. Downtown restaurants sit within a few blocks of each other, with Kelly Avenue at the south end. The harbor is about four miles north on Highway 1, reached by Capistrano Road. Sam's Chowder House is on the highway between the two. Plan to drive between areas, or to bike the Coastside Trail if you have time.

Seafood by the water

Barbara's Fishtrap

Barbara's Fishtrap is the harbor's old-timer. Barbara Walsh started with a catering business in 1971 and moved the Fishtrap to Pillar Point Harbor in 1978. Her family still runs it. The menu is classic: shrimp and prawn cocktails, fish and chips, scallops, seafood pastas and chowder. It takes no reservations, accepts cash and major cards and closes for an hour each afternoon to change the fryer oil. Its site lists lunch and dinner daily, with closing times that can shift with the weather.

Sam's Chowder House

Sam's Chowder House at 4210 North Cabrillo Highway serves New England style seafood with ocean views. It is known for lobster rolls, fresh local crab and a raw bar. Sam's is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The website lists daily hours from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends, closing between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Its outdoor oceanfront tables are pet friendly. Book ahead on weekends. Our seafood guide covers options near Palo Alto.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company has brewed beer on the San Mateo coast since 2000. Its original brewpub faces the shore at 390 Capistrano Road and opens daily for lunch and dinner, from 10 a.m. on weekends. In 2026 it also runs a newer flagship, HMB On Main, at 730 Main Street, open from 11:30 a.m. daily. Both serve pub food meant to go with the house beers.

Main Street meals

Pasta Moon

Pasta Moon at 845 Main Street has served Half Moon Bay for nearly four decades under owner Kim Levin. The kitchen makes its own pasta, cooks in a wood oven and leans on local seafood and farm produce. The restaurant notes that it is a Michelin Guide selection. Its site lists dinner nightly from 5 p.m. and lunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is the town's best choice for a sit-down dinner.

Johnny's

Johnny's at 547 Main Street occupies a building that John Evan built in 1967, where the original Johnny's served the town for years. The current owners revived the name with breakfast and brunch menus and pies. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. A sister restaurant opened in downtown San Mateo.

Dad's Luncheonette

Dad's Luncheonette sits in a historic train caboose at 225 Cabrillo Highway South, at Kelly Avenue. Chef Scott Clark left fine dining to run this sandwich and pie shop. The website says it opens Thursday through Sunday. It is a casual counter rather than a sit-down restaurant, which suits a quick stop on the way to the beach.

Bakeries, delis and coffee

Moonside Bakery & Cafe at 604 Main Street is a European style bakery with danishes, cookies, tarts, cakes and pies. The cafe side serves breakfast and lunch, including eggs, pancakes, waffles, soup, sandwiches on house bread and wood-fired pizza. It also takes cake orders.

The Garden Deli Cafe at San Benito House, 356C Main Street, makes sandwiches on bread baked in house. Its site lists daily hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The historic inn also runs a cantina. Grab sandwiches here for a beach picnic.

Cafe Society at 522 Main Street is owner Harpo Marx's coffeehouse, serving Moschetti's coffee with pastries from local bakeries, sandwiches and salads. It opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on weekends and hosts jazz on Friday evenings.

Eating with kids

The coast is an easy family outing if you plan food around the beach. Sandwiches from the Garden Deli Cafe or Moonside travel well to the sand. At the harbor, Barbara's Fishtrap and the brewpub both have casual rooms where noise is not a problem. The breakwater walk gives children something to do while you wait for a table. Sam's has outdoor tables with space to move. Pasta Moon is the one place on this page that feels like a grown-up dinner, though it serves pizza from the wood oven. The water is cold and rip currents are strong, so treat the beaches as places to walk and dig, not swim. Our beaches guide covers safer picks.

Seasons and crowds

Half Moon Bay's busiest food weekends come in October, when the Art and Pumpkin Festival fills Main Street and pumpkin patches line Highway 92. Our pumpkin patches guide covers the farms. Summer weekends bring beach traffic, even though the coast is often foggy. Winter is quieter. Crab season usually opens in late fall, though the date varies with state rules and conditions. Rainy weekdays are the easiest time to get a table anywhere. Check our weather guide before you go.

Planning your visit

  • Leave early. Highway 92 jams on sunny weekends. Our coast travel guide covers routes and timing.
  • Eat lunch, not dinner. Most visitors drive home before dark. The fog often comes in by late afternoon.
  • Bring layers. Harbor patios can be cold and windy even in summer.
  • Add the south coast. Food is scarce south of town, so eat or buy supplies here first. See our Pescadero and coast guide.
  • Stay the night. Coastside inns and rentals fill on weekends. You can compare Half Moon Bay hotels or look for a rental near the harbor.

Good to know

  • We list only places confirmed on their own websites in late 2026. Leaving a restaurant out does not mean it has closed.
  • Coastal restaurants change hours with the seasons and weather. Check the day you go.
  • Barbara's Fishtrap does not take reservations.
  • Check menus online for allergens before you order.
