Fremont is the closest East Bay city to Palo Alto, straight across the Dumbarton Bridge. With about 230,000 residents it is bigger than any Peninsula city. It was formed in 1956 from five small towns. Each still has its own feel. For food, that means an old-fashioned main street in Niles, a strong Afghan community in Centerville and shopping centers full of Indian, Chinese and Korean restaurants farther south.
This guide names only places we confirmed on their own websites in late October and early November 2026. Some of Fremont's best-known restaurants, especially in Little Kabul, did not have current websites we could confirm, so we describe that area without naming them. For Fremont's history, Mission San José and Ardenwood, see our Fremont town guide.
Fremont's food districts

- Mowry Avenue, near the Fremont Hub and Interstate 880, has chain and family restaurants.

Niles
Bronco Billy's Pizza
Bronco Billy's Pizza at 37651 Niles Boulevard is the old town's pizza parlor, a few doors from the antique shops. Its site lists 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It also takes online orders. Note that an older web address for the restaurant now points to an unrelated gambling site, so use the Niles address above.
Devout Coffee
Devout Coffee began in 2011 when its owners turned a used barbecue into a coffee roaster in their garage. They opened the Niles Boulevard storefront in December 2012. The cafe and roastery at 37323 Niles Boulevard list hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. It also sells beans online and by subscription. Our coffee roasters guide covers roasters near Palo Alto.
Papillon
Papillon sits on Mission Boulevard just west of the entrance to Niles Canyon, near the Sullivan Underpass. It says it has served upscale French food to the Bay Area for over 45 years. Executive chef Nittra Foreman has led the kitchen for almost 40 years and owns the restaurant with Charles Foreman, who manages it. Dinner is served Tuesday to Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and it is closed Monday. It has a wine cellar and hosts private events. See our French food guide for options closer to home.
Centerville and Little Kabul
Centerville is the heart of one of the largest Afghan American communities in the United States. Kabob houses, bakeries selling flatbread and pastries and grocers line Fremont Boulevard and nearby streets. We could not confirm current websites for the best-known Afghan restaurants in late 2026, so we do not name them here. Walk the blocks around Fremont and Peralta boulevards and look for busy dining rooms.
Renegade
Renegade is Devout Coffee's restaurant at 37324 Fremont Boulevard. It serves brunch every day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Devout's coffee. It also takes online orders for pickup and delivery. The restaurant notes extra street parking on Peralta Boulevard and a public lot one building away that is free on weekends.
Bill's Cafe
Bill's Cafe, the South Bay breakfast chain that dates to 1977, runs a Fremont branch at 39222 Fremont Boulevard. Its site lists 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. Our breakfast guide covers morning spots in Palo Alto.
Pakistani and Indian food
Shalimar at 3325 Walnut Avenue serves Pakistani, Indian and halal food, with more than 50 dishes including chicken tikka masala, seekh kebabs, biryani and fresh naan. It also has restaurants in Dublin and San Francisco. The Fremont branch lists lunch and dinner on weekdays and longer midday hours on weekends. See our halal food guide for options near Palo Alto.
Paradise Biryani Pointe, a national chain focused on biryani, lists a Fremont restaurant on Mowry. It is a quick, inexpensive option near the freeway. For more choices closer to home, see our Indian food guide.
Diners near the freeway
Black Bear Diner at 5035 Mowry Avenue is part of a West Coast diner chain known for large plates and a bear theme. The Fremont restaurant is independently owned and lists hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is an easy family stop on the way to or from Interstate 880.
Pairing food with a day out
Most Palo Alto visitors come to Fremont for something else first, then eat. A few combinations work well:
- Niles morning. Coffee at Devout, a walk past the antique shops and a look at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, then pizza at Bronco Billy's.
- Mission Peak. Start the climb at dawn to beat the heat, then refuel at Bill's Cafe or Renegade. Our Mission Peak guide covers parking and trail rules.
- Coyote Hills and Ardenwood. Both sit near the east end of the Dumbarton Bridge. Ardenwood Historic Farm is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is cashless. Eat on Mowry Avenue on the way home. See our Coyote Hills guide.
- Date night. Papillon's dinner service suits an anniversary, with an easy drive back over the bridge after the evening traffic clears.
Eating with kids
Black Bear Diner, Bill's Cafe and Bronco Billy's are the most relaxed choices with children. All three serve familiar food quickly and do not mind noise. Shalimar's kebabs and naan also go over well with young eaters who like mild flavors. Papillon is a quiet dinner room better kept for adults.
Planning your visit
- Cross early or late. The Dumbarton Bridge is busy eastbound on weekday evenings. Weekend mornings are easiest.
- Budget the toll. State bridge tolls are collected westbound only. Our bridges and tolls guide explains FasTrak and 2027 increases.
- Plan around Mondays. Papillon closes on Monday.
- Stay over. If you are visiting family or hiking at dawn, you can compare Fremont hotels near Interstate 880.
Good to know
- We list only places confirmed on their own websites in late 2026. Leaving a restaurant out does not mean it has closed.
- Mission Coffee Roasting Company closed in December 2023 after about 30 years in Fremont.
- Hours on this page come from restaurant websites and can change without notice.
- Check menus online for allergens before you order.
