Rooftop drinking is rare in Palo Alto. Downtown buildings are low, the city guards its skyline closely and most bars sit at street level on Emerson and Ramona streets. That makes the few roofs that do serve drinks worth knowing. One hotel bar looks out over University Avenue to the Santa Cruz Mountains, a design gallery has a rooftop restaurant and wine bar, Menlo Park has a roof that opens in warm months and Santana Row in San Jose has a fire-pit wine terrace.
We start in Palo Alto and then move to nearby towns, named as we go. Each venue was confirmed through its own or its hotel's website, or through a verified page in our business directory, in late October or early November 2026. Rooftops are especially prone to closures for weather and private events, so check before you go. You must be 21 or older to order alcohol.

President's Terrace, 488 University Avenue
President's Terrace crowns the Graduate by Hilton Palo Alto, which opened in the former Hotel President building in January 2023. Hilton's dining page calls it the city's only rooftop bar and describes California-inspired food and drink, with playful cocktails curated by Bad Birdy and a locally driven menu. Views run west toward the Santa Cruz Mountains, which makes the hour before sunset the best time to go. Metro Silicon Valley's 2025 bar guide described 360-degree views that reach the bay.
- Booking. Tables are reserved through OpenTable with a 90-minute limit.
- Food. The hotel says its kitchens close daily at 9:30 p.m. Hours for the bar itself are not posted on the hotel's page, so check OpenTable or call.
- Downstairs. Lou and Herbert's, the hotel's all-day cafe and bar, pours cocktails in the evening if the roof is full.
- Getting there. The hotel is on University Avenue, about a 10 minute walk from the Palo Alto Caltrain station. Parking at the Graduate is valet only.
For more on the hotel, see our downtown hotels guide.

RH Rooftop Restaurant, Stanford Shopping Center
The RH Rooftop Restaurant is on the third floor of the RH Palo Alto design gallery at 180 El Camino Real, part of Stanford Shopping Center. The dining room sits under a large skylight with olive trees and a limestone fountain. Next door, a wine bar pours Champagne and wines, including limited bottles from small Napa Valley producers. A barista bar serves coffee. Both open onto a landscaped rooftop park with views toward Kings Mountain. It suits a glass of wine after shopping or a long lunch more than a late night out.
British Bankers Club, Menlo Park
The British Bankers Club at 555 Santa Cruz Avenue, about 2 miles north of downtown Palo Alto, calls itself a contemporary tavern. Its roof deck is the closest seasonal rooftop to Palo Alto. In November 2026, though, the website says the roof is closed for the season and is available only for private parties. The main bar and the plaza patio downstairs stay open daily from 4 p.m., with happy hour every day from 4 to 6 p.m. The menu includes oysters, a dinner list and a separate rooftop menu for when the deck reopens. Watch its website in spring. Our Santa Cruz Avenue guide covers the rest of downtown Menlo Park.
Cielo at Hotel Valencia, Santana Row
Cielo is the rooftop wine bar of Hotel Valencia on Santana Row in San Jose, about 13 miles from Palo Alto. The hotel describes it as the quieter counterpoint to Vbar, its main bar downstairs: a seasonal rooftop with fire pits, mountain views and a curated California wine list served with light bites. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5:30 to 10 p.m., weather permitting. From November 27, 2026, the hotel says Cielo will turn into a holiday setting for the winter. Private parties can close it, so the hotel suggests calling ahead at 408-551-0010. Pair it with dinner from our Santana Row guide.
Views without a roof
A few places give you the view without the elevator. Madera Bar at the Rosewood Sand Hill hotel in Menlo Park looks across terraces to the Santa Cruz Mountains and lists hours of 2 to 11 p.m. daily. The Alpine Inn's creekside garden in Portola Valley is ground level but feels far from town. Our hotel bars guide and beer gardens guide cover both.
Groups, birthdays and private events
Rooftops are popular for celebrations. Each of these venues handles groups differently. President's Terrace takes reservations through OpenTable, so a party of six or eight can book a table like any restaurant, within the 90-minute limit. The British Bankers Club rents out its closed roof for private parties through the events form on its website, which can be a good winter option for a company gathering with heaters. Cielo hosts private parties too, which is why the hotel asks guests to call before a visit.
For a bigger event downtown, our private dining rooms guide lists restaurants with rooms that hold larger groups.
Tips for a rooftop evening
- Time it for sunset. Sunset falls just before 5 p.m. in December and after 8 p.m. in June. Book a table about 45 minutes ahead of it.
- Bring a layer. Even after warm days, Peninsula evenings cool fast once the sun drops. In winter they fall into the 40s.
- Check for private events. Hotel rooftops close for weddings and company parties without much notice. Call the same day.
- Expect hotel prices. None of these venues posts drink prices online. Hotel bars usually charge more than street-level bars.
- Watch the clock. President's Terrace has a 90-minute table limit when reserved.
Drinking responsibly and getting home
Rooftop drinks are a slow, scenic affair, so pace yourself and eat something. President's Terrace is walkable from the Palo Alto Caltrain station and the downtown hotels. For Menlo Park, the Menlo Park station is a short walk from Santa Cruz Avenue. Santana Row is not on Caltrain, so a rideshare or a sober driver is the sensible choice from there. Our rideshare and robotaxi guide explains pickup options in Palo Alto.

- Cielo is closed Monday and Tuesday and can close for weather.
- President's Terrace reservations carry a 90-minute limit.
- Bring ID. Hotel bars check it like any other bar.
