Not drinking no longer means a glass of soda with a lime wedge. More people are skipping alcohol for health, sport, pregnancy, faith or simply a Tuesday. The best bars have responded with drinks built the same way as cocktails: fresh juice, house syrups, tea, spice and careful dilution, just without the spirit. Palo Alto has no dedicated alcohol-free bar that we could confirm, but several of its cocktail bars and restaurants list zero-proof drinks worth ordering on their own merits.
This guide covers Palo Alto first and then nearby towns, named as we go. Each place was confirmed through its own website, its current menu or a verified page in our business directory in late October or early November 2026. Menus change with the seasons, so treat named drinks as examples and ask what is on today.

Bar Underdog, 299 California Avenue
Bar Underdog comes from the team behind Protégé and treats its spirit-free list as part of the program, not an afterthought. The bar makes its own cordials, including ginger beer, cola and tonic. It also runs a highball dispenser that filters and strongly carbonates water. The October 2026 menu lists two spirit-free drinks at $15 each. Gem combines guava, jasmine green tea and soda. Unified Ferments is a fermented tea. A non-alcoholic Japanese beer, Suntory's All-Free, is also $15. For comparison, house cocktails are $19 and classics $17. During the weekday happy hour from 4 to 5:30 p.m., classics drop to $13 and highballs to $10. The menu shows no happy hour price for the spirit-free drinks, so the gap narrows only for drinkers. The bar opens Tuesday through Saturday from 4 p.m., closes at 11 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on Friday and Saturday and takes no reservations.
Agave-inspired mocktails downtown
Hamilton Avenue has two Mexican restaurants a block apart that make a point of serving non-drinkers well.
- Reposado, 236 Hamilton Ave. Its list includes mocktails such as the Mucho Loco Tamarindo and the Jamaiquita, names that point to tamarind and jamaica, the hibiscus used in Mexican aguas frescas.
- San Agus, 115 Hamilton Ave. Los Charrúas is the house zero-proof cocktail. Aguas frescas and Mexican sodas round it out. A weekday afternoon happy hour runs from 3 to 5 p.m.
Both suit a group where some people want mezcal and others do not. Our cocktail bars guide covers their spirit lists.
Japanese and Southeast Asian flavors
Yutori at 3375 El Camino Real is a Japanese cafe and market by day and a restaurant and bar at night. The dinner bar mixes cocktails with shiso, ume, yuzu and hojicha and lists two zero-proof cocktails using the same pantry. The bar opens Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome at the bar. By day, the cafe's matcha drinks are another good alcohol-free choice.
INDO Restaurant & Lounge at 3295 El Camino Real makes house sodas such as lemongrass mint and ginger. Its happy hour runs weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m., a good time to try one with small plates.
Pubs and beer bars
Beer culture has caught up with non-drinkers faster than most. The Rose & Crown at 547 Emerson Street has a non-alcoholic section on its menu. In Mountain View, about 6 miles south, Ludwig's Biergarten at 383 Castro Street serves German soft drinks and says it offers non-alcoholic versions of its drinks. Germany has a long tradition of alcohol-free wheat beers and lagers, so ask what is in the fridge. Up the Peninsula in San Carlos, Devil's Canyon Brewing makes its own root beer for its Friday beer garden parties.
Hotel bars
Roger, the bar and restaurant at The Ameswell Hotel at 800 Moffett Boulevard in Mountain View, lists mocktails on its daily 3 to 4 p.m. happy hour menu alongside wine, beer and cocktails. Metro Silicon Valley's 2025 bar guide also mentioned non-alcoholic "School Nights" drinks at President's Terrace, the Graduate hotel's rooftop bar. Hotel bars usually have the staff and ingredients to make something off-menu, so ask. See our hotel bars guide.

How to order a good zero-proof drink
- Ask what the bar is proud of. House sodas, shrubs and teas are often the best non-alcoholic things on a menu.
- Name a flavor, not a drink. Say you want something tart, bitter or spicy. Bartenders work better from a direction than a recipe.
- Watch for bitters. Most cocktail bitters are made with alcohol. A dash adds only a trace, but if you avoid alcohol completely, say so.
- Check "NA" labels. In the United States, a beer labeled non-alcoholic can still contain up to 0.5 percent alcohol. Look for "alcohol free" or 0.0 if that matters to you.
- Pace a long night. Alternating a zero-proof drink with each cocktail is the simplest way to stay clear-headed. Many bartenders will make a smaller, lighter version on request.
- Order at happy hour. Mocktails are rarely discounted, but happy hour food is. Our happy hours guide lists times.
Beyond bars
Some of the best alcohol-free drinks in Palo Alto come from places that never served alcohol. Cold-pressed juice bars, boba shops and specialty coffee bars all make drinks with the same attention a good bartender brings. Our guides to juice and smoothies and coffee in Palo Alto cover the daytime side. An evening coffee or matcha can be a welcome stand-in for a nightcap.
Designated drivers and getting home
Zero-proof menus make it easier to be the designated driver without feeling left out. California's limit for drivers 21 and over is 0.08 percent blood alcohol. Drivers under 21 face a zero-tolerance rule, so a good mocktail is a practical choice as well as a pleasant one. If nobody in the group is driving, Caltrain stops at both Palo Alto stations and rideshare covers the rest.
