About Sushi House

Sushi House is a family-owned Japanese restaurant in Town & Country Village, the open-air shopping center on El Camino Real across from Stanford. It was founded in 1988 by Kenji Ueki and the late Masahiro Nagamine. The restaurant says it has served Palo Alto, Stanford University and visitors from around the Bay Area for more than 35 years from the same address.

Over those decades it has kept its focus narrow: classic Japanese comfort food made to order, at lunch and dinner, for dine-in or takeout.

The menu covers the dishes most people want from a neighborhood Japanese restaurant. The restaurant names nigiri and sashimi, chirashi bowls, udon and soba noodles, teriyaki plates and crispy tonkatsu as its core. Seasonal fish and daily specials appear when available.

  • Appetizers and salads: edamame, chicken karaage, a green salad and a tofu salad.
  • Nigiri and maki: nigiri such as tamago and ikura, plus rolls from a simple kappa maki to a dragon roll.
  • Sushi combinations: lettered combination plates for an easy order.
  • Donburi: rice bowls topped with fish, including chirashi donburi and sake don.
  • Entrées: chicken teriyaki and tonkatsu.
  • Noodles: udon and soba, such as vegetable udon and zaru soba.
  • Sides: miso soup and brown rice.

The menu is not split into separate lunch and dinner versions. Menus change, so check the website for the current list.

Dietary notes

The menu does not label vegetarian dishes. Several items list no fish or meat in their names, such as edamame, cucumber kappa maki, avocado maki, green salad, vegetable tempura and vegetable udon. Broths and sauces may contain fish or meat, so confirm ingredients with staff if you avoid them. As at any sushi restaurant, the menu carries the standard warning about eating raw or undercooked fish, meat and eggs.

Takeout and reservations

Takeout is straightforward. You can order online through the restaurant's ChowNow page or call 650-321-3453 during business hours. Chirashi bowls, udon soups and sushi combinations are made fresh, so pickup times can stretch during the lunch rush.

The website does not describe an online booking system. For reservation questions or same-day seating, call the restaurant. Larger dine-in groups are asked to call ahead so the team can arrange seating during busy service.

Finding the restaurant

Suite 158 is on the ground level, facing the main walkway through the village. From Highway 101, take the Oregon Expressway exit and head west toward Stanford. From downtown Palo Alto, drive south on El Camino Real for about a mile. Parking is free in the Town & Country lots off El Camino Real and along the store rows. The restaurant warns that spaces closest to its door fill quickly at dinner, especially Thursday to Saturday. If the front row is full, loop through the village and check the side lots near the market entrance. Accessible parking is near the main walkway entrances.

Who it suits

Sushi House suits a reliable weeknight dinner, a quick sushi lunch near Stanford or a takeout order on the way home along El Camino Real. The menu works for groups with mixed tastes: one person can order nigiri while another gets teriyaki, tonkatsu or a bowl of udon. Families with children who do not eat raw fish have cooked options such as chicken teriyaki, karaage and noodles. It is a neighborhood restaurant rather than an omakase counter, so it is not the place for a long tasting menu. For special-occasion dining, see our fine dining guide.

Tips for visiting

  • Lunch ends at 2 p.m. and dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. every day, so do not plan a mid-afternoon meal.

  • The restaurant is closed on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • In the same center you will find Asian Box, Wildseed and Manresa Bread. Our Town & Country Village guide and Asian food guide have more.
