About Naschmarkt Palo Alto
Naschmarkt Palo Alto is an Austrian restaurant at 2323 Birch Street, around the corner from California Avenue. Its website calls the food new Austrian cuisine: time-honored Austrian and German recipes reworked with locally sourced ingredients and modern technique. The name comes from the Naschmarkt, the largest open-air produce market in Vienna.
The name has a history worth knowing. Naschmarkt began in Campbell in 2011. The Campbell group opened this Palo Alto restaurant in 2022. The two have since gone separate ways. The Palo Alto website says the restaurant is independently owned and operated and is not affiliated with the Campbell location. The Campbell group's site says the same from its side. The two sites give different years for the split, so treat them as different restaurants that share a name and a style of cooking.
The Palo Alto website's welcome note is signed by Remzi and the Naschmarkt family. On OpenTable the restaurant describes itself as family-owned.
What is on the menu
The dinner menu mixes Austrian classics with lighter California dishes. The familiar Austrian plates are all here:
- Wiener schnitzel: a breaded cutlet of pork, chicken or veal served with lingonberry sauce and potato salad.
- Hungarian beef goulash: paprika-braised beef with herbed spätzle and sour cream.
- Pork knuckle confit and Rinderrouladen: both named on the home page as house dishes.
- Pepper steak: a New York steak with green peppercorn sauce and fries.
Starters include a homemade pretzel with bacon and beer cheese sauce, garlic prawns, steamed mussels and a crispy spring roll filled with brie. Soups include sweet potato with salted caramel and red cabbage with apple. Lighter mains include pan-seared salmon, an eggplant lasagne and a bucatini primavera. Sides are where the Austrian kitchen shows again: braised sauerkraut, spätzle, braised red cabbage and a pretzel with Bavarian mustard.
For dessert the home page names Kaiserschmarrn, apple strudel and Sachertorte. There are separate lunch, dessert, cocktail and wine menus. Menus change, so check the website before you go.
Lunch and wine
Lunch is more casual than dinner and leans on sandwiches and sausages. The menu lists a sausage trio of pork bratwurst, paprikawurst and a sausage of the day with sauerkraut and mustard. Sandwiches include a chicken schnitzel sandwich on a pretzel bun, a sausage sandwich, an Austrian egg and sausage sandwich and the Nasch Burger with caramelized onions. Spätzle with smoked chicken, tavern fries with truffle oil and a beet salad round it out. The goulash and Wiener schnitzel appear at lunch too.
The wine list leans Austrian, with Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Blaufränkisch well represented. It also covers Germany, Italy, France, Hungary and plenty of Napa and Sonoma bottles. Wines are grouped by style, from crisp mineral whites to bold reds. Several are poured by the glass. House wine comes by the full or half carafe. A cocktail menu is posted separately.
Dietary notes
The menu does not label vegetarian or gluten-free dishes. It asks diners to talk to their server. Several dishes list no meat, such as the eggplant lasagne, the butter lettuce salad and the sweet potato soup, but confirm the details when you order. Breaded and pastry dishes contain gluten.
