About Evvia
Evvia Estiatorio has been one of downtown Palo Alto's best known dinner rooms for decades. It sits on Emerson Street a block off University Avenue and serves Greek food built around a wood-fired grill and a large open kitchen. "Estiatorio" simply means restaurant in Greek. Most locals just call it Evvia.
The restaurant was founded by two couples, George and Judy Marcus and Kenny and Angie Frangadakis, who wanted to share the cooking of their Greek heritage. The same group later opened Kokkari Estiatorio in San Francisco's Jackson Square. The two restaurants are still run as sisters. Evvia describes its food as traditional Greek dishes made with California produce, meat and seafood and a more modern hand in the kitchen.
Evvia is also one of the Palo Alto restaurants listed in the MICHELIN Guide. It does not hold a star, but the listing has helped keep it on the short list for visitors who want a special dinner within walking distance of the train.
What is on the menu
The menu changes with the seasons, so treat any single dish as a guide rather than a promise. Evvia's own site mentions classics such as avgolemono, the lemony egg and rice soup; keftedes, Greek meatballs; dolmades, stuffed grape leaves; and kokinistro, a slow braise in tomato sauce. Lamb shows up in several forms, including kapama, a spiced lamb stew. Grilled dishes come off the open fire that anchors the dining room.
Expect a mix of small plates meant for sharing, called mezedes, alongside larger grilled mains. Seafood plays a big part, as it does in coastal Greek cooking. The wine list leans toward Greek and California bottles. If you are new to Greek food, ordering several mezedes for the table is an easy way to try more of the kitchen's range.
The room and the experience
Evvia describes its dining room as warm and cozy, with Mediterranean inspired decor. The open kitchen gives the room a lively feel on busy nights. It is a popular place for business dinners, family celebrations and Stanford parents' weekends, so the room can be lively. Ask for a table on the covered patio or away from the kitchen if you want a quieter conversation.
The restaurant lists Nikos Maheras as executive chef, with chef partner Erik Cosselmon and general manager and partner Panos Gogonas. There is no dress code posted. Smart casual clothing is the norm, which is typical for downtown Palo Alto.
Who Evvia suits
Evvia works well for a celebration, a client dinner or a meal with visiting family who want something more special than a quick bite. Shared plates make it a good choice for groups that like to try a bit of everything. It is less suited to a fast solo lunch, since the menu and the room are built around lingering. Greek mezedes often include meatless dishes, but grilled meat and fish are the heart of this menu. Check the current menu if you have dietary limits.
Groups and private dining
Evvia handles groups better than most downtown restaurants. Its website lists a chef's table for up to 18 people in front of the open kitchen, a covered patio that seats up to 40 for dinner and inside dining for up to 80. For a full buyout, the restaurant can host up to 130 guests for a reception or seated dinner. These numbers come from the restaurant's events information, which also gives slightly different group limits on another page, so confirm the details with the events team when you plan.
Tips for visiting Evvia
Reserve ahead, especially for Friday and Saturday dinner and during Stanford events such as commencement in June. The restaurant takes bookings on its website and says it will not take or change reservations by email. Lunch is usually easier to get into than dinner on short notice when the restaurant is serving it.
Evvia is an easy walk from the Palo Alto Caltrain station, which makes it a good dinner on a day trip without a car. If you are driving, allow extra time to find parking downtown on weekend evenings. After dinner, University Avenue is a block away for dessert or a walk. Our fine dining guide covers other special-occasion restaurants.
