About Mike's Bikes of Palo Alto

Mike's Bikes of Palo Alto is the local store of Mike's Bikes, a bicycle retail chain with 18 stores and more than 250 cycling enthusiasts on staff, according to the company. The Palo Alto store is at 4233 Middlefield Road in south Palo Alto, near the Mountain View line. The company is operated by Headlands Ventures LLC. Its tagline is "for the ride of your life."

The store says it is surrounded by some of the best cycling in the South Bay. It is set up for riders who use those roads. It stocks road, mountain, kids and electric bikes and runs a full service department. Most of the chain's stores are in Northern California, from Sausalito and San Francisco to Sacramento and San Jose. A handful are in Colorado.

Bikes and brands

The Palo Alto store page names six bike brands: Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Cervélo, Giant, Gazelle and Pivot Cycles. The store page claims the widest selection of bikes. It also sells kids' bikes, which makes it a single stop for a family buying bikes for several riders.

To try a bike before you buy, use the online test ride form for the Palo Alto store. Booking ahead lets staff have the right size ready. Eligible bikes can be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, according to the company, alongside the usual cards and PayPal.

Service and repairs

Mike's Bikes says its Palo Alto service department is open every day. Walk-ins are welcome, though the store encourages appointments, which you can book online. The store says its bike techs are ready for tune-ups and repairs. The chain also advertises free Tuesday night tech clinics. Check the clinics page to see which stores host them.

Commuters who work in Stanford Research Park have a second Mike's option. The company lists a small shop called Mike's Bikes at The Hub at 3215 Porter Drive, inside the research park.

Fitting, demos and rentals

Mike's Bikes offers professional bike fitting in three levels. Level 1 sets a neutral position for cleats, saddle and handlebars. Level 2 adds a more detailed physical assessment, pedaling analysis and a 60-day refinement visit. Level 3 uses Retül 3D motion capture for riders focused on performance, injury or leg length differences. The fit page asks riders to bring a rideable bike, riding clothes and shoes. It charges a fee for cancellations with less than 48 hours' notice. Ask the Palo Alto store how to book a fitting there.

The chain also runs a demo and rental program that treats demos and rentals as the same thing. Bikes are reserved online at least 12 hours ahead. Riders under 18 need a parent or guardian at pickup. Everyone needs a government-issued ID plus the card used to pay. Availability and bike types vary by store, so check the demo page or call the Palo Alto shop to see what you can book.

Tips for visiting

Before you buy, think about how you will ride. A commuter heading to Caltrain needs different gear from a weekend rider climbing into the foothills, so tell staff about your routes, your budget and any bike you already own. Ask what is included with a new bike, such as a first tune-up. Budget for a lock and lights too.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. You can call or text it at 650-858-7700. One quirk: the Get Directions link on the store page points to a Mountain View address, so enter the Palo Alto street address yourself in your map app.

Bike shops in Palo Alto are busiest on Saturday mornings, so a weekday visit is easier if you want unhurried help with a purchase or fitting.
