About De Novo

De Novo is a gallery of fine contemporary jewelry in downtown Palo Alto. It says it represents the finest contemporary jewelry artists from around the world. In practice, that means handmade and studio pieces from independent makers rather than mass-market brands. You can shop in the gallery or through the website, which has an online store with the same inventory.

The gallery's address is 250 University Avenue, but the door is around the corner. De Novo says its entrance is on Ramona Street, two doors south of University, next to CitiBank and Marvel Cake. OpenStreetMap did not carry an address for this listing, so the one above comes from the gallery's own location page.

The artists and the jewelry

The gallery's artist list runs to about 45 names. It includes Barbara Heinrich, Todd Reed, Alex Sepkus, Bernd Wolf, Atelier Munsteiner, Atelier Zobel, Spinelli Kilcollin, Elizabeth Garvin, Dana Bronfman and Enric and Roc Majoral, among many others. Each artist has a page on the website with a selection of current pieces.

The online catalog is organized by type: earrings, necklaces, pendants, rings, bracelets and pins. A New Work page shows pieces that have just arrived. This is a good place to start if you want something one of a kind, or if you already follow a particular jeweler and want to see their work in person.

Trunk shows and events

De Novo hosts trunk shows where an artist or their atelier brings a larger selection to the gallery for a few days. Its gallery shows page listed these dates in fall 2026:

  • Alex Sepkus: October 27 and 28.
  • Atelier Zobel: November 5 to 7, which the gallery calls its much-anticipated annual event with Peter Schmid.
  • Barbara Heinrich: November 19 and 20, with a chance to meet the artist and see a new nature-inspired collection.

A trunk show is the best time to see a wide range from one maker. You can join the gallery's mailing list from its website to hear about future shows.

Who it suits

De Novo is a specialist shop, not a general jeweler. It suits shoppers looking for an artist-made gift, an engagement or anniversary piece with a distinct design or a ring from a maker they already collect. Because the artists work in very different styles, it helps to browse the artist pages online first and note a few names. Staff can then pull pieces from those artists when you visit. It is less suited to quick repairs or watch batteries, which the website does not list as services.

Buying, sizing and exchanges

Every piece on the website can be bought in the gallery, online, by phone or by email, subject to prior sale. The gallery says all purchases are wrapped in a De Novo signature gift box. In the gallery it takes cash, checks and Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Online orders are paid by card and ship only to the billing address.

If you like a ring but need a different size, call or email to ask whether it can be resized or ordered in your size. Exchanges are possible within two weeks for another piece or store credit, but the gallery does not give refunds. Special and custom orders are final. Sales tax applies in the gallery and on orders shipped to California addresses.

Hours, parking and directions

The gallery's hours page listed Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., labeled as its August hours, with the gallery closed on Sunday and Monday. Call 650-327-1256 to confirm before a special trip.

De Novo lists several public lots and garages within three blocks, including the one beneath the gallery on Ramona Street and the garage under City Hall. If you are only picking up a purchase, the gallery says you can call from your car as you pull up to the Ramona Street entrance and staff will bring it out. Our downtown parking guide explains how the city's lots work.

The gallery is a short walk from the Caltrain station and from the shops on University Avenue. If you are on Ramona Street, take a look at the Spanish Colonial Revival buildings covered in our Palo Alto architecture guide.
