Palo Alto draws residents, students and researchers from all over the world, so you rarely have to look far for someone to practice with. It is a good place to learn a language. Adults have four main routes: the public adult school's evening and online classes, credit courses at Foothill College, open enrollment at Stanford and specialist schools such as the Alliance Française. The city library adds free English practice for newcomers.

This guide covers classes for adults that we confirmed in October 2026. Schedules run by term, so many fall sections had already started by the time this was written. Use the details below to plan for winter. For children's language programs, see the note at the end.

Palo Alto Adult School

The Palo Alto Adult School is the most affordable choice and is open to anyone 18 or older, with the same fees for everyone. Its world language classes meet at Palo Alto High School or live on Zoom. The fall 2026 catalog listed:

LanguageLevels offered in fall 2026Format and fee
SpanishBeginning (level 1 and level 5), low intermediate, intermediate, advanced conversation and literaturePaly or online, $200 for ten weeks

ItalianBeginning I, intermediate ILive online, $150 for ten weeks
ChineseBeginning, continuingPaly, $180 for nine weeks

A few details stand out. The beginning Spanish class is pitched partly at parents whose children are in the district's Spanish immersion program. The beginning Chinese class teaches tones and phonetics first and introduces characters in the second quarter. The French high intermediate class reads a contemporary novel. Several classes ask you to buy a textbook before the first meeting, either from the office or online.

The school also sells self-paced online courses through ed2go, including Conversational Japanese and a sign language course. It says it is recruiting teachers for Arabic, German, Hindi and Korean, so new languages may appear. The fall quarter ends December 18 and the winter catalog follows on the Adult School website. Refunds need 72 hours' notice before the first class.

Free ESL

English as a second language is the school's largest program and its state-supported ESL classes are free, textbooks included. New students register in person at the Greendell campus, 4120 Middlefield Road, then take a placement test. Seats are limited and classes can fill at registration, so check the website for the next session's date.

Foothill College

Foothill College in Los Altos Hills lists Japanese and Spanish among its departments, plus English for second language learners. Winter 2027 classes run January 4 to March 26. The application opened October 1, 2026 and priority registration begins November 9. Visitors and students may need a daily digital parking permit.

Which route fits you

If cost matters most, the Adult School is hard to beat: ten weeks of Spanish or French cost about $200 in fall 2026. If you need credit or a transcript, Foothill is the only option here that gives transferable units. Stanford courses suit people who want a university setting and do not mind paying more. The Alliance Française is the specialist pick for French, with levels mapped to official exams and a calendar that runs all year. Many learners mix two routes, such as a term class plus a weekly conversation group.

Tips for adult learners

  1. Take the placement test. The Alliance Française and the Adult School ESL program both place you by level. Starting too low wastes a term.
  2. Choose in person if you can. Online classes are convenient, but a classroom forces you to speak.
  3. Add conversation practice. Language exchange groups meet around the Peninsula. Pair a class with weekly practice. See clubs and meetups.
  4. Plan for the full term. Most classes build week to week. Missing two sessions early makes it hard to catch up.
  5. Practice where you will use it. Heading abroad to try your new language? Get an eSIM before you fly so translation apps work on arrival.

For children

Palo Alto's biggest language programs for children are inside the public schools. PAUSD runs Mandarin and Spanish immersion as choice programs, with a lottery each spring. The library holds a free Bilingual Family Storytime at College Terrace on Thursday mornings. See our storytimes guide.
