Wealthfront is a financial technology company headquartered in downtown Palo Alto. It offers automated investment accounts, a cash account, borrowing and financial planning tools, all through an app and website. Its annual report for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026 lists its principal executive offices at 261 Hamilton Avenue.
The company is a small one by headcount, with 391 full-time employees at that date. It is also one of the few downtown Palo Alto companies to have gone public in recent years. It listed on Nasdaq in December 2025.
This profile covers the company's history and its place in Palo Alto. It is not financial advice and does not compare Wealthfront's products with anyone else's.
What Wealthfront does
Wealthfront's first product was automated investing. A customer answers questions about goals and risk. Software then builds and manages a portfolio of low-cost index funds. The company launched that service in 2011. It was one of the first firms to be called a robo-advisor.
Since then the product line has grown. Wealthfront added tax-loss harvesting in December 2012 and a form of direct indexing in 2013. In February 2019 it introduced the Wealthfront Cash Account, which places customer deposits with a network of partner banks. Later it added bill pay and direct deposit features, a college savings plan run with the state of Nevada starting in 2016 and home lending after it bought a mortgage company in July 2024.
Wealthfront is not itself a bank. Its cash account places customer money with partner banks, which over the years have included Citibank, HSBC and UMB. In June 2026 the company said UMB Bank would provide the account's direct deposit, bill pay and ATM features for all users by October 2026. Details of insurance coverage and rates change often, so check Wealthfront's own disclosures rather than any third party summary.
All of this happens online. Wealthfront has no branches. Customers never need to visit Palo Alto. The company does not take walk-in visitors.
From kaChing to Wealthfront
The company began in 2008 as kaChing, a service for analyzing mutual funds and the managers who run them. Its founders were Andy Rachleff and Dan Carroll. Wikipedia gives Redwood City as the place of founding. We could not confirm the early office from a primary source.
Rachleff was already a well known name on the Peninsula. He co-founded the venture capital firm Benchmark in 1995. Our Benchmark profile covers that firm, which keeps its office in Woodside. Rachleff served as Wealthfront's founding chief executive until January 2014.
The kaChing idea did not last. The founders turned the company into an investment manager for ordinary savers, renamed it Wealthfront and launched the automated service in 2011.
Leadership over the years
The company has had a small number of chief executives.
- Andy Rachleff, 2008 to January 2014, then executive chairman.
- Adam Nash, January 2014 to October 2016.
- Andy Rachleff again from 2016, before returning to the executive chairman role in 2021.
- David Fortunato, who had been chief technology officer from 2009 to 2019, later became president and chief executive.
Investors over the years included Benchmark, Index Ventures, Ribbit Capital, DAG Ventures and Social Capital, plus individuals such as Marc Andreessen and Jeff Jordan.
A cancelled sale and an IPO
In January 2022 the Swiss bank UBS agreed to buy Wealthfront for $1.4 billion. The deal was called off in September 2022. Neither company gave a reason. UBS instead bought a $69.7 million note that could convert into Wealthfront shares.
Three years later Wealthfront went public on its own. Forbes reported its filing in late September 2025. The company completed its initial public offering in December 2025 on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker WLTH. Reports at the time said shares were priced at $14, raising about $485 million.
In September 2026 the company announced it had passed $100 billion in total platform assets across about 1.5 million customers, according to a company announcement dated September 9, 2026, as summarized on Wikipedia. The Hamilton Avenue office
261 Hamilton Avenue is in the downtown core. Hamilton runs parallel to University Avenue one block south and is lined with low office buildings, restaurants and shops. Our downtown Palo Alto guide describes the area.

Downtown has been a first home for many Palo Alto companies, from Google's eight-person office in 1999 to Facebook's early years. Most left once they outgrew the small buildings. Wealthfront is unusual in staying downtown as a public company, which works partly because its headcount is modest. Our page on University Avenue's tech history follows that pattern.
The company's filing says its employees are based across the United States and Canada. Not every Wealthfront employee works on Hamilton Avenue.
Wealthfront's place in the local ecosystem
Palo Alto has a long history with online finance. Confinity and X.com, the companies that became PayPal, started a few blocks from Hamilton Avenue in 1999. Our PayPal profile covers those years. Wealthfront belongs to a later wave of fintech companies that grew up around Stanford and Sand Hill Road.
The distances are small. PayPal's 2001 headquarters was at 1840 Embarcadero Road. Confinity once worked out of 165 University Avenue, a short walk from Hamilton Avenue. Today a newer generation of finance and software startups rents space in the same downtown blocks.
It also shows how close venture capital and startups are in this area. A founding partner of one of the best known Sand Hill Road firms started the company, raised money from his own firm and others and built it a few miles away. That loop of investors becoming founders is a theme across our venture capital section.
