Where Visitors Can Eat on the Stanford Campus

Stanford's dining halls are for students, but the campus has plenty of cafes and counters open to anyone with a card or phone. Here is where to eat, by area, with hours as published in late October 2026.

Feeding yourself on a Stanford visit is easy if you know one rule: the dining halls are off limits. Stanford Dining says plainly that residential dining halls are not open for general public dining. Everything else is fair game. Campus has a food court in Tresidder Union, a late-night burger spot in Old Union, a string of Coupa Café outposts and a set of cafes run by Stanford's Residential and Dining Enterprises (R&DE) in academic buildings.

The catch is timing. Most campus cafes follow the academic calendar and many close on weekends and between quarters. The hours below were published by each operator in late October 2026. Check before you go, especially in December and summer. For restaurants in town, see our Palo Alto food and drink guide.

Why not the dining halls?

Stanford's residential dining halls run on student meal plans. According to the Stanford Dining FAQ, access is limited to people with an eligible meal plan or other authorized access. Faculty, staff and affiliates with a valid Stanford ID may dine in. Members of the public can eat there only as participants in an event organized by an eligible Stanford unit or registered student group, with approval from Stanford Dining in advance. Simply attending an event on campus does not qualify. Row houses, co-ops and suites dining are also listed as not open to the public.

So skip the halls and head to one of the places below.

Tresidder Union: the main food court

Tresidder Memorial Union, at 459 Lagunita Drive next to White Plaza, is the closest thing Stanford has to a student center food court. R&DE calls it Union Square at Tresidder. Seating spills out onto shaded patios on both sides of the building. It is the most reliable place on campus for a weekend meal.

Stanford Dining says the Tresidder Starbucks was the first company-owned Starbucks on a university campus. Several counters take online and app orders, which saves time at lunch during the school year.

CoHo

Tresidder is also home to the Coffee House, known to everyone as CoHo. Tresidder dates the coffee house to 1966. It settled into Tresidder by 1968 after years of student campaigning for a campus coffee house and has served since then as a place to study, socialize and catch student performances. Tresidder's building guide places CoHo among the shops on the south side, reached from the west entrances by the back patio. Its hours are not listed with the R&DE counters, so check on arrival.

The Axe and Palm in Old Union

Across White Plaza in Old Union (520 Lasuen Mall), The Axe and Palm is the campus burger joint. The menu runs to burgers, thick milkshakes, comfort food and boba, with indoor and outdoor seating. It keeps the latest hours on campus: Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. That makes it the easy answer after an evening concert or game.

Coupa Café on campus

Coupa Café, the coffee house founded in downtown Palo Alto in 2004 and known for Venezuelan arepas, runs several campus outposts. Coupa's own locations page lists:

  • Green Library: 571 Escondido Mall, a kiosk at the library. Handy for the Main Quad and Hoover Tower.
  • Y2E2: 473 Via Ortega, in the Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building on the Science and Engineering Quad.
  • Huang Center: 475 Via Ortega, a grab and go counter inside the Jen-Hsun Huang Engineering Center with short midday hours.
  • Graduate School of Business: TA Café at 655 Knight Way. The GSB lists hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sunday.

Coupa also has a cafe in Stanford Research Park at 3215 Porter Drive, plus its downtown cafes on Ramona Street and Lytton Avenue. Expect arepas, paninis, pastries and Coupa's own roasts. Our Palo Alto coffee guide has more on the local scene.

R&DE cafes in academic buildings

Stanford's own cafes are scattered through academic buildings and aimed at weekday lunch crowds. Anyone can buy. R&DE notes that students skip sales tax with their ID, which tells you the rest of us simply pay it. The cafe page listed these in late October 2026:

Forbes Family Café has a plant-forward menu with pho, laksa and dim sum and makes a good lunch stop on the engineering side of campus. The Med Café serves Starbucks drinks and a daily hot lunch for people visiting the medical school or the hospital. EVGR serves beer and wine, so bring ID.

For groceries and snacks, the Market at Munger at 554 Salvatierra Walk sells grab and go meals, produce and basics. It lists hours of Tuesday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday.

The Graduate School of Business includes Arbuckle Dining Pavilion on its visitor dining page. Good to know

  • Between quarters and during Stanford's winter closure (December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027) many cafes cut hours or close.
  • Weekends on campus are quiet. Tresidder's chains, The Axe and Palm and the GSB's Saturday morning hours are your main options.
  • University Avenue, with dozens of restaurants, is about a mile down Palm Drive from the Oval. Our guide to cheap eats covers budget options in town.
