Palo Alto cooks well. The farmers markets run year-round, the specialty grocers draw shoppers from across the Peninsula and plenty of households treat a good knife or a Dutch oven as a lifetime purchase. The city's kitchen stores match that. Two national cooking retailers with demonstration kitchens sit about a mile apart on El Camino Real. A tableware specialist, department store home floors and a family hardware store fill the gaps. For an independent shop, Los Altos has one that has been in business since 1984.
This guide covers each store, the services that make them worth a visit in person and when an outlet trip makes sense. We confirmed every store on its own website or a verified listing in our directory in October 2026.

Town & Country Village: Sur La Table and Hudson Grace
Sur La Table is the most service-rich kitchen store in town. It runs hands-on cooking classes and private group classes, which work well for a team outing or a birthday. It also offers knife sharpening, a gift registry and in-store pickup of online orders. Our directory lists hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Book classes early in the holiday season.
A short walk away, Hudson Grace focuses on the table rather than the stove. It sells white Italian ceramics, candles, serveware, bedding and gifts, with registry, trade and corporate gifting services. It lists hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Our Town & Country Village guide covers parking and lunch.
Stanford Shopping Center: Williams Sonoma, Crate & Barrel and Macy's
Williams Sonoma sits on Azmoor Place, between Sushi Roku and LoveSac. The center's directory calls it Williams-Sonoma Grande Cuisine. The store sells cookware, bakeware and gourmet food. It lists cooking and technique classes and wedding registry help. Hours in our directory are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Crate & Barrel's two-story store has been at the center since 1986, according to its store page. It sells kitchenware alongside furniture and lighting, with registry consultations. Macy's lists cookware, housewares, tabletop and small electrics on its home floor, Floor 2, with a Wedding & Gift Registry desk on Floor 3. Bloomingdale's also has a home department. The Container Store, on the Quarry Road side of the center, sells storage and organizing products that help with a kitchen remodel. Our Stanford Shopping Center guide has the full store list and parking tips.
Cooks Junction, Los Altos
For an independent kitchen store, drive ten minutes south to Cooks Junction at 205 Main Street in downtown Los Altos. It has served the area since 1984. Its website describes a shop packed floor to ceiling with cookware, knives, glassware, ceramics, linens and gadgets. Cutlery brands include Wüsthof, Zwilling J.A. Henckels, Shun, Miyabi and Bob Kramer. Cookware brands include All-Clad, Le Creuset, Staub, Hestan and Swiss Diamond. Call the store at 650-941-6530 to check stock on a specific piece. Our downtown Los Altos guide covers the rest of Main Street.
Knives and sharpening
A sharp knife is safer and faster than a dull one. Two places in Palo Alto list knife sharpening: Sur La Table at Town & Country Village and Hassett Ace Hardware on Alma Street, a family-owned store since 1957. Ask about turnaround times and whether they handle serrated edges or hard Japanese steel before you drop off a set. For buying knives, compare in person. Hold a few chef's knives at Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma or Cooks Junction to judge weight, balance and handle shape. Western knives are usually heavier and more forgiving. Japanese knives are often lighter and harder, which keeps an edge longer but can chip.
Outlets and budget options
For cast iron and enameled cookware at lower prices, Le Creuset runs outlet stores at Gilroy Premium Outlets and at San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore. Livermore also has a Zwilling J.A. Henckels outlet for knives and cookware. Both centers are about 40 to 45 miles away, so combine the trip with other shopping. Our outlet malls guide has hours and directions.
For a first apartment or a vacation rental, the IKEA at 1700 East Bayshore Road in East Palo Alto sells inexpensive pots, utensils, dishes and storage, just across US 101 from Palo Alto.
Building a basic kitchen
New arrivals to Palo Alto, from graduate students to families relocating for work, often need a kitchen kit from scratch. Buy a few good pieces rather than a big boxed set. This short list covers most home cooking:
| Item | Why | Where to compare |
|---|---|---|
| 8 inch chef's knife and a paring knife | Handles nearly all cutting | Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma, Cooks Junction |
| 10 or 12 inch skillet | Searing, sauteing, eggs | Any of the kitchen stores |
| Enameled Dutch oven | Braises, soups, bread | Le Creuset outlets, Cooks Junction |
| Large and small saucepans | Grains, sauces, pasta | Crate & Barrel, Macy's |
| Sheet pans and a cutting board | Roasting and prep | Crate & Barrel, IKEA |
Add pieces as you learn what you cook most. If you rent, check whether your stove is gas, electric or induction before buying pans, since induction needs magnetic cookware. Palo Alto's utility offers rebates for switching to induction, which our home electrification rebates guide explains.
Cooking classes
Both national stores teach. Sur La Table runs hands-on classes and private group events. Williams Sonoma lists cooking and technique classes. Store classes are a good way to try a pan or a knife before you buy it. Our cooking classes guide lists other schools and community programs in the area. For a taste of the Bay Area's food scene with a guide, you can book a food tour.
