Saratoga Gap is less a destination than a junction. Skyline Boulevard and Highway 9 meet here on the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Around that intersection, Midpen land, a state park, a county park and a regional trail all touch. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, known as Midpen, manages the 1,600-acre preserve on the northeast corner. Its main trail is a short, pretty segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail that ties the whole network together.

Most Palo Alto hikers know the name from Castle Rock State Park across the road, whose trails start at the same spot. This guide explains the parking, the Midpen trail, the connections in every direction and the rules, which change as you cross from one agency to another.

Getting there

From Palo Alto, drive Page Mill Road west to Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) and turn left. Midpen places the Long Ridge trailhead about 3.3 miles south of Page Mill and about 3.6 miles north of Highway 9, so the Saratoga Gap junction is roughly 7 miles of ridge driving from the top of Page Mill. Plan on about 45 minutes from downtown. The alternative is Interstate 280 or Highway 85 to Saratoga, then up Highway 9 through the redwoods. Both roads are narrow and winding, with heavy weekend traffic from cyclists and motorcyclists. There is no transit.

Parking at the vista point

Midpen lists two places to park:

  • Saratoga Gap Vista Point Parking Area: 30 spaces plus 1 accessible space on the southeast corner of the Skyline and Highway 9 intersection. It is on Caltrans property, not Midpen land.
  • Saratoga Gap roadside parking: 5 spaces.

From the vista point, cross Highway 9 on foot to the Midpen trailhead on the northeast corner of the junction. Cross with care. Drivers come around the bends fast. The Castle Rock trails leave from the southwest side of the same intersection.

  • Hours: Midpen preserves open a half hour before sunrise and close a half hour after sunset.
  • Fee: none for the Midpen preserve or the vista point lot. Castle Rock charges $10 per vehicle at its own Kirkwood lot 2.5 miles southeast.
  • Restrooms and water: none in the preserve.

The Saratoga Gap Trail

This is the preserve's main route. Midpen describes a multi-use trail nearly two miles long that parallels Skyline Boulevard and is dedicated as part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. It passes under the spreading branches of weathered oaks, then drops into a cool Douglas fir forest. It ends across Skyline from the Hickory Oaks trailhead at Long Ridge Preserve.

Midpen also points out moss-covered trees, lichen-covered boulders and sandstone outcrops. The trail is mostly gentle, which makes it a good out and back for a short visit: about 4 miles round trip to the Hickory Oaks crossing and back. Beyond that, the Ridge Trail continues north through Long Ridge, Skyline Ridge and Russian Ridge.

Where the trails connect

Midpen says the Saratoga Gap Trail links to trails reaching Sanborn-Skyline County Park, Castle Rock and Big Basin state parks, Upper Stevens Creek County Park and the Long Ridge, Skyline Ridge and Monte Bello preserves. Here is how the main connections work.

Bay Area Ridge Trail

According to Midpen, one of the longest continuous segments of the Bay Area Ridge Trail runs 13 miles from Sanborn-Skyline County Park to the northern boundary of Russian Ridge. Saratoga Gap sits near its southern end. Strong hikers and riders can make a one-way trip with a car shuttle at each end.

Castle Rock and the Skyline to the Sea Trail

State Parks lists Saratoga Gap as the starting point for several Castle Rock routes. The Middle of the Park from the Gap Loop runs 9 miles round trip with 1,530 feet of climbing. The Gap to Gap Loop, from Saratoga Gap or Waterman Gap, runs 16.4 miles with 1,860 feet of gain. The Saratoga Toll Road, a logging road and stagecoach line from 1871, heads down from the Gap toward Big Basin. Our Castle Rock guide covers those trails in detail.

The classic Skyline to the Sea backpacking trip also starts here. State Parks gives the full route to Waddell Beach as 25.2 to 28.2 miles. In October 2026 its trail camp page said the trail was open from Castle Rock to the Big Basin day use area and that all Big Basin trail camps remained closed after the 2020 fire. Treat a through trip to the coast as not possible until State Parks says otherwise.

Saratoga to the Skyline Trail

Midpen helped fund this 9.7-mile trail, which links the City of Saratoga's Quarry Park with Sanborn County Park and opened in November 2020. It is run by the City of Saratoga and Santa Clara County Parks, not Midpen. Midpen says it allows hiking, horses and leashed dogs, with no bikes except on the Skyline Trail segment in Sanborn County Park that parallels Highway 35. See our Sanborn County Park guide and our Saratoga guide for the downhill end.

Rules: bikes, horses and dogs

The rules change at every agency boundary, so check which land you are on.

  • Bikes in the Midpen preserve: designated trails only. Helmets are required. Speed limit 15 mph, or 5 mph when passing. E-bikes are not allowed on most Midpen trails. Announce yourself when passing hikers and riders.
  • Bikes in Castle Rock: only on the Skyline Trail (Bay Area Ridge Trail) on the north side of Highway 35, per State Parks.
  • Horses: allowed on designated Midpen trails, with helmets recommended. In Castle Rock, horses are allowed on the Saratoga Toll Road.
  • Dogs: not allowed in the Midpen preserve or anywhere in Castle Rock. Service dogs are accommodated. Our dog-friendly hikes guide lists alternatives.
  • Also prohibited in the preserve: drones, fires, smoking, weapons and any water contact.

Midpen's trail closure notice for Saratoga Gap read "No reported trail closures" on October 31, 2026. Check the official preserve page before you go.

Seasons and fire weather

High on the crest, the Gap often sits above the summer fog while the valley below bakes or the coast stays gray. Winter storms can bring mud, fallen branches and the odd road closure on Highway 9 or Skyline. Spring is the best season for wildflowers on the open slopes and for moss on the oaks.

Midpen's preserve page links stories on its year-round Wildland Fire Resiliency Program and on sudden oak death, which it monitors across more than half its lands. Fires are banned in Midpen preserves all year. On Red Flag days, check Midpen and State Parks before driving up. See our air quality guide when smoke is in the forecast. Midpen's calendar lists a guided bike outing, Ride the Views from Gap to Gully, on November 8, 2026 and an Explorer Hike on a Four Public Lands Loop on February 3, 2027.

History

Midpen says the steep hillsides of oak and mixed evergreen forest once supplied bark for tannin and wood for charcoal, both important to early settlers. The district acquired the first parcel in 1974 as a gift of about 165 acres from Paul and Nessie Cheseborough, supporters of open space. The Sempervirens Fund helped pay for other parts of the preserve.

Safety and what pairs nearby

Good to know

  • There is no water or restroom in the preserve. Midpen suggests two quarts per person for a two-hour hike.
  • Ticks, poison oak and rattlesnakes are all present. Mountain lions live here and are occasionally seen.
  • Cell service is sporadic. State Parks says there is none in Castle Rock.
  • Emergencies: call 911. Midpen nonemergency line: 650-691-1200.

Pair a short Ridge Trail walk with the falls and sandstone at Castle Rock, or head down Highway 9 for lunch in Saratoga. For more ridge hikes closer to Palo Alto, see our hiking guide.
