Cinco de Mayo is a bigger deal in the United States than in most of Mexico. The Peninsula is no exception. On May 5 the taquerias are busy, the cocktail bars pour more margaritas than usual and families head out to the free festivals in East Palo Alto and San Jose, which usually fall on the nearest Sunday. Palo Alto itself does not stage a public celebration that we could find. What it does have is a good range of Mexican restaurants, from a Puebla-focused family kitchen to downtown mezcal bars.

In 2027 Cinco de Mayo falls on Wednesday, May 5. This guide covers what the day marks, which festivals ran in 2026, where to eat in town and what else is on the calendar that week. For the rest of the month, see our May guide.

What Cinco de Mayo marks

On May 5, 1862, a smaller and less well equipped Mexican army defeated French troops at the Battle of Puebla. France went on to occupy Mexico for several years, but the victory became a symbol of resistance. In Mexico the day is mainly marked in the state of Puebla. It is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16.

In California the date took on a life of its own. Mexican communities here celebrated it from the 1860s. Over the 20th century it grew into a celebration of Mexican American heritage. On the Peninsula, that heritage runs deep. Our guide to Latino history in Palo Alto traces it from the ranchos to today.

What is open on May 5

Cinco de Mayo is not a public holiday. On Wednesday, May 5, 2027:

  • City offices, libraries and schools keep their normal schedules.
  • Trash, recycling and compost are picked up on the usual day.
  • Caltrain runs the regular weekday timetable. Cinco de Mayo is not on its holiday list.

The weekend before is the busier one for festivals. It is also when traffic builds around the East Palo Alto and San Jose events.

East Palo Alto Festival Latino

The closest festival is next door. East Palo Alto's Cinco de Mayo Festival Latino ran from noon to 6 p.m. at Bell Street Park in 2026. The city listed live music, cultural performances, a parade, food and local organizations. Entry was free and the event was billed as family friendly. El Comité Latino organizes it with support from the city, according to the City of East Palo Alto's event page. Bell Street Park is a short drive or bike ride from north Palo Alto. Our East Palo Alto guide covers the city.

San Jose Cinco de Mayo Cultural Parade and Festival

San Jose held its third annual Cinco de Mayo Cultural Parade and Festival on May 3, 2026. The parade ran from 10 a.m. to noon along King Road, starting at Alum Rock Avenue and heading toward the Interstate 680 underpass. The festival followed from noon to 5 p.m. at Emma Prusch Farm Park, 647 South King Road. Allow about 30 minutes by car from Palo Alto on a Sunday morning. Our San Jose guide has more on the city.

Festival tips

Community festivals run on volunteer energy and small budgets, so a little preparation goes a long way:

  1. Bring cash. Many food stalls and craft vendors at neighborhood festivals take cash only or prefer it.
  2. Arrive near the start. Parades kick off on time. The shady spots along the route go first.
  3. Park once. Street parking near Bell Street Park and Emma Prusch Park fills by midday. Walk the last few blocks rather than circling.
  4. Mind the sun. Early May afternoons in the South Bay can reach the 80s °F. Pack hats, water and sunscreen for kids.
  5. Check the day before. Organizers post schedule changes and performer lineups on social media in the final week.

Where to eat in Palo Alto

Book ahead for May 5 itself, especially at the sit-down restaurants. Taquerias handle the rush with longer lines rather than reservations.

A taste of Puebla

Palo Alto Sol on California Avenue is the most fitting choice. The family that runs it says its mission is to bring the Cocina Barroca Poblana, the cooking of the city and state of Puebla, to California. It is part of a three-restaurant group with Vive Sol in Mountain View and Quinto Sol in Redwood City. It serves dinner Tuesday to Sunday and is closed Mondays.

Downtown

  • Reposado on Hamilton Avenue calls itself Mexican fine dining, with a large tequila list and private dining for groups.
  • San Agus Cocina Urbana at 115 Hamilton Avenue serves Mexico City street food, such as tacos al pastor and gorditas, with a deep mezcal list and a weekday happy hour.
  • Tacolicious on Emerson Street is the Peninsula branch of a San Francisco taco bar, with a heated parklet and clearly labeled vegan tacos. Its listed hours end at 7 p.m., so go early.

California Avenue and beyond

  • Sun of Wolf on California Avenue draws on the flavors of Jalisco and Mexico City and serves mezcal and tequila cocktails. It opens for dinner Wednesday to Saturday.
  • Celia's on El Camino Real is a sit-down family restaurant with fresh-mixed margaritas and its own parking lot.
  • Sancho's Taqueria on Middlefield Road is known for Baja-style fish tacos. LuLu's at Town & Country Village opens at 9 a.m. daily.

A party at home

Cooking at home? Latin markets near Palo Alto stock dried chiles, fresh tortillas, Mexican cheeses and the ingredients for mole poblano, the dark sauce most closely tied to Puebla. Our Latin markets guide lists where to shop. Most taquerias also sell family packs and trays for pickup, which beats cooking for a crowd on a school night. Order a day ahead for May 5.
