About Go Fish Poke Bar
Go Fish Poke Bar is a counter-service poke shop at Stanford Shopping Center, in Suite 244B. It is one of three Go Fish locations. The others are on Hamilton Street in Redwood City and on South De Anza Boulevard in San Jose. The company describes its food as Hawaiian-inspired poke made with premium ingredients. It backs that up with a chef who trained in sushi.
That chef is Jerome Ito, co-founder and executive chef. According to the company, he grew up in Los Angeles as a fourth-generation Japanese American and trained under sushi master Andy Matsuda. He later became head sushi chef at Kitchen Sync, which the company calls Google's first full-service sushi bar, where he also taught sushi classes. His take on poke grew into a catering business and then into Go Fish. He has since opened other concepts, Taro San Japanese Noodle Bar and Yutori.
What is on the menu
The core of the menu is the build-your-own poke bowl in regular or large size. You pick a base of sushi rice, brown rice, mixed local greens or chilled yam noodles. Then you choose your poke: plain ahi tuna, salmon, seared albacore or a vegetable mix, or dressed options such as the signature poke mix, sesame shrimp, spicy scallops or a seared salmon shoyu mix. Sauces include ponzu, sesame gomae, spicy togarashi mayo and ginger soy. Toppings range from miso crab and avocado to masago and Gilroy garlic furikake.
If you would rather not decide, the shop lists recommended bowls. The Signature pairs its poke mix with ponzu and garlic furikake. The Tataki Bowl uses seared albacore. I Heart Veggies is built around the vegetable poke. Hand rolls, or temaki, are the other half of the menu. Options include spicy tuna, crab, baked miso salmon, shrimp tempura and a roll the shop calls Bacon of the Sea, made with crispy miso salmon skin.
Chef's specials add cooked dishes such as a miso-braised short rib with a panko-crusted soft egg and a shoyu ginger chicken. Sides include sunomono salad, seaweed salad, a potato macaroni salad, gomae string beans and pork gyoza. Drinks run to organic lemonades in yuzu, strawberry and lychee and Thai iced tea. For dessert there is Bubbies mochi ice cream in flavors like guava, lychee and green tea. Weekly specials rotate.
Dietary notes
Go Fish says it offers vegan and gluten-free options. The vegetable poke mix, the I Heart Veggies bowl and the veggie hand roll are the clearest meatless choices. Some rolls and toppings use sesame seeds, which the online menu flags. Several sauces are mayo or soy based. Ask at the counter if you need to avoid a specific ingredient.
How to order
You can order at the counter, or online for pickup through the Square ordering site linked from the Go Fish website. The ordering site serves all three locations, so check that Palo Alto is selected. The shop notes that online prices are slightly different from dine-in prices because of processing fees. For groups, Go Fish caters family-style spreads and individual lunch bowls with pickup or delivery. Email its catering team, which says it responds within 24 hours.
Who it suits
Go Fish suits a quick lunch during a shopping trip, a light dinner or a meal for a family with mixed tastes. The Kid's Bento Box, with shoyu ginger chicken, onigiri and gomae string beans, is an easy pick for children. People who want to try several kinds of fish can share a few hand rolls alongside a bowl.
