About the practice

Endodontic Health of Palo Alto is the specialist practice of Dr. Tri Huynh, DDS, PhD, at 3525 Alma Street in south Palo Alto. Endodontists focus on the inside of the tooth: the pulp and the root canals. Most patients arrive on referral from their general dentist for a root canal or a related procedure. The practice says it serves Palo Alto, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Mountain View and other mid-Peninsula cities.

Its stated mission is to provide a high standard of endodontic care in a comfortable environment and to work with each patient's own dentist to preserve natural teeth. The practice is open Monday through Friday by appointment. This page describes the practice as it presents itself and gives no medical or dental advice. If you have severe facial swelling or trouble breathing, call 911 or go to an emergency room.

Services

The practice lists these treatments:

  • Root canal treatment: removing infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth, then cleaning and sealing the canals.
  • Endodontic retreatment: treating a tooth that already had a root canal but needs further care.
  • Apicoectomy: a surgical procedure at the tip of the root.
  • Cracked teeth: diagnosis and treatment of cracks that reach the pulp.
  • Traumatic dental injuries: care after a knocked, broken or displaced tooth.

Your endodontist and your general dentist will decide together which option fits your case. After a root canal, most teeth need a crown or a filling from the general dentist, so expect a follow-up visit there.

The office and technology

The practice describes its office as new and equipped with digital x-ray, a surgical microscope and a cone beam computed tomography machine, known as CBCT. CBCT is a 3D imaging tool. The practice says it uses it when indicated to help diagnose and plan more complex cases. For comfort, the treatment rooms have heat and massage chairs.

About Dr. Huynh

According to the practice, Dr. Huynh received his dental training, doctorate and a fellowship in geriatric dentistry from UCLA. He then completed the three-year endodontic certificate program at UCSF, where he stayed on as faculty. The practice describes him as a full clinical professor at UCSF who has directed its predoctoral endodontics program and teaches clinical endodontics to students and residents. He is a specialist member of the American Association of Endodontists and a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Mid-Peninsula Dental Society and the Northern California Academy of Endodontics. His research on endodontic infections has appeared in journals including the Journal of Dental Research and the Journal of Endodontics.

Scheduling and your first visit

Call 650-433-1215 to book. The practice says it schedules appointments as promptly as possible. If you are in pain or have an emergency, it says it will try to see you the same day. It allows each patient enough time to discuss concerns. Because the practice does surgical work, some procedures run long. The office asks for patience if the schedule slips.

Your first appointment is a consultation that explains the diagnosis and options. Treatment is sometimes done the same day. A complex medical history or treatment plan means an evaluation first, then a second visit for treatment. Bring:

  1. Your referral slip and any x-rays.
  2. A list of medications you take, including over-the-counter and herbal products.
  3. Your dental insurance card and any completed forms.

Tell the office about medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves or joints before treatment. A parent or guardian must come with patients under 18 to the consultation. For dental emergencies, the practice says it reserves time slots each day and asks you to call in the morning. The practice also publishes a financial policy page, so read it or ask about costs and insurance before treatment starts.
