About Shreve & Co.

Shreve & Co. is a jeweler founded in San Francisco in 1852. Today its home is Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. The store at 129 Stanford Shopping Center sells fine jewelry, bridal pieces and luxury watches. It also runs a full service counter for repairs, appraisals and engraving. Shreve's own website says the store "has become one of the premier destinations for fine jewelry and watch connoisseurs from around the globe."

Shreve's website also lists the separate Rolex Boutique Palo Alto at 329 Stanford Shopping Center among its locations. The main store was recently renovated. Shreve describes the result as a modern, light-filled interior.

A history that starts in 1852

According to the company's history page, jewelers George C. Shreve and his nephew Samuel S. Shreve founded the business in San Francisco in 1852. Their first shop was at 110 Montgomery Street, on the corner of Clay Street. In 1887 Shreve became the second jeweler in the United States to represent Patek Philippe.

In 1906 the company moved into a new eleven-story building at Post Street and Grant Avenue. That building survived the earthquake that struck San Francisco in April of that year. The company says it has passed through five generations of family ownership. Its history page now calls Shreve a destination at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. Its locations page lists the Palo Alto store along with the Rolex Boutique.

Jewelry, bridal and watches

Shreve carries a long list of jewelry designers. The names on its website include Cammilli Firenze, Hearts On Fire, Kwiat, Mikimoto, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen, Roberto Coin, Wellendorff, Harry Kotlar, Memoire and Robert Procop, among many others. It also sells its own 1893 line, with bridal, color fashion and essentials collections.

Bridal has its own section of the website. Shoppers can browse engagement rings by shape, from round and oval to emerald and cushion cuts. They can also browse by style, including solitaire, halo, three-stone and estate rings. Wedding bands and stackable bands are sold too. The site also offers guidance on upgrading an existing ring.

On the watch side, Shreve sells Rolex and Rolex Certified Pre-Owned, TUDOR, Baume & Mercier, IWC Schaffhausen and NOMOS Glashütte. Rolex buyers can also visit the dedicated boutique across the center.

Repairs, appraisals and custom work

Shreve lists four main in-store services:

  • Repairs and service: jewelry and watch repairs.
  • Appraisals: jewelry and watch appraisals.
  • Engraving: jewelry and watch engraving.
  • Custom jewelry design: including custom ring design for engagement rings.

The website has a page for scheduling an appointment. Booking ahead makes sense for a bridal consultation, a custom design project or a watch purchase, when you want unhurried time with a specialist. Repairs and appraisals can take time, so ask for an estimate when you drop a piece off.

That mix of services makes Shreve useful even if you are not buying. A watch that needs service, a family piece that needs an appraisal or a ring you want to upgrade can all go to the same counter. Engraving can turn a watch or bracelet into a personal gift for a graduation, a wedding or a retirement. If you are in town for Stanford commencement in June, the center is a short trip from campus.
